The Prenatal Development of Humerus in Korean Fetuses

Abstract
Histological and roentgenological observations were done in evaluating the fetal developmental process of the humerus with ninety-two Korean fetuses of 9 mm to 360 mm crown-romp length and the following results were obtained.
1. The head of the humerus was, in the fetuses of 24-30mm, hemispherical and distinct from the body, and general shape was almost similar to that of the adult.
2. A primary bony collar was present in 24mm, and in 30mm fetus it extended for nearly one-third of the total length of the humerus.
Erosion of the bony collar by periosteal bud and destruction of the calcified cartilage were occurred by 30mm.
3. The cartilage canals of the humerus were first seen in the proximal epiphysis at 55mm, and in the distal epiphysis at 60mm.
A nutrient foramen was noted at 60mm, and one or more foramena were found in all specimens larger than this. The main foramen was found to be located at the middle of the shaft.
4. The endochondral ossification was first noted at 40mm. As endochondral ossification proceeded proximally and distally and growth zones became established, subperiosteal bone formation also proceeded longitudinally and, until about 180 mm, extended about 1-2mm beyond the zone of bony trabeculae in the growth zones; After 220mm, the extents of endochondral and subperiosteal ossification were the same and at term occupied 78% of the length of the humerus.
5. In the fetus of 50mm, the pectoralis major and teres major were inserted partly into perichondrium, and partly into the periosteum of the subperiosteal bone. The periosteum in areas of muscle attachment remained relatively thick throughout the Lt-l period
6. Trabeculation of the endochondral, ossification first noted at 50rnm. Fusion of endochondral trabeculae With inner aspect of sub periosteal bone began by 60mm. Evidence of reconstruction appeared in both proximal and distal ends by 75mm and was consistently present in both ends in all specimens of 130mm and larger.
